Drunk Driver Critically Injured After Crashing Into Pole in Nassau County: Police

A 21-year-old New Hyde Park woman is in critical condition after police say she drove drunk and struck a utility pole Sunday morning in New Hyde Park.

Authorities received a report of an auto accident near Jericho Turnpike and Cherry Lane at 12:36 a.m. to find that a 2007 Toyota Camry struck a wooden utility pole.

The driver, identified as Andoni Ugarte, was found to be intoxicated and was suffering from multiple trauma injuries, police say.

Ugarte was subsequently placed into custody and taken to an area hospital for treatment where she was listed in critical condition.

She was charged with DWI and will be arraigned when medically practical.
