Ex-Boyfriend Charged in Fatal Glen Cove Stabbing

He will be arraigned on Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.

The ex-boyfriend of the woman who was fatally stabbed to death in March was charged with second degree murder, police said.

Nassau County homicide detectives traveled to northern California to arrest Jose Cartagena, 54, of Glen Cove, on Monday, April 6.

Cartagena will be arraigned on Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.

Yanira Estelle Canjura Martinez, 32, was stabbed to death by a man in the rear of a Glen Street home at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 26.

Martinez was walking south on Pearsall Avenue when she was killed, police said.

“We immediately determined this was a domestic crime because the victims purse which contained money was not taken,” said Detective Lieutenant John Nagle in a press release. “Surveillance recording from the area also confirmed the theory that robbery was not a motive.”

Police identified an ex-boyfriend, Cartagena, as the person of interest and connected him to the murder.
