FEMA Aid May Be Available to Mineola Residents

Mineola residents who sustained damage or losses due to Hurricane Sandy may be eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster aid funds.

Residents should first look toward their insurance company for the first line of recovery assistance, as there is a cap of $30,000 on what FEMA can give claimants above the insurance recovery amount.

However, in order to attempt to apply for the aid, residents need to register with FEMA 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).

“Just to get your name on the list if you anticipate you’re not going to make a full recovery from your insurance company, you have the potential, not the guarantee, to make some recovery from FEMA,” Mineola Village Trustee Lawrence Werther said during the November 14 meeting of the village board at the village hall, noting the issue was addressed the previous night at a meeting of the Nassau County Village Officials’ Association by two representatives from FEMA who were present.
