Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. More information about the suspect who was arrested after a shootout with Nassau County police early Tuesday morning in Uniondale has been released. Jonathan R. Vazquez, 20, of Bay Shore is now charged with attempted murder for the shootout, in addition to charges for two other incidents. Police said that Vazquez robbed a Levittown woman in her driveway at gunpoint on Feb. 16. Vasquez is reportedly a member of the Crips street gang, according to Newsday. (East Meadow Patch)
  2. Although masks are now optional in schools or at the discretion of the school district, New York state officials issued guidelines going forward. Anyone who has knowingly been exposed to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask and be tested. The New York State Department of Health still requires symptomatic students to be tested. Students or staff who return to school after completing five days of isolation due to infection or exposure are required to mask in school (and in other indoor public spaces) on days 6-10. (New City Patch)
  3. Mineola law firm Meltzer, Lippe, Goldstein & Breitstone at 190 Willis Ave. has added three new lawyers to its practice. Laura Brancato joins the practice as a partner in the newly formed elder law litigation group. Alexander Gayer is welcomed as a partner in the firm's corporate practice group. Jerome Hesch is now counsel in the firm's business and real estate taxation, trusts and estates, tax exempt organizations and private wealth and taxation practice groups. (Long Island Business News)
