Gelato in the Garden

Smell the flowers and cool off with gelato at Venezia's Garden Center in Mineola.

Three summers ago Frank and Joanne Venezia decided a delicious addendum to their would be gelato — thinking how refreshing to eat Italian ice cream while looking at plants and fountains. They contracted with Allen Aingorn, co-owner of Baci Gelato in Williston Park, to keep them supplied.

What’s In It: Gelato, says Aingorn, has less fat than ice cream: 8 percent fat in gelato and 20 percent in ice cream. Gelato also contains a lot less air than ice cream, making it more dense and creamier. The flavoring used by Aingorn is all natural.

Typical flavors are Nutella, vanilla, strawberry, raspberry, chocolate and, most popular, stracciatella, a vanilla gelato with chocolate shavings.
