Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- A Glen Cove doctor faces up to 30 years in jail for pleading guilty to swindling almost $4 million in COVID-19 economic relief loans from the U.S. federal government. Prosecutors charge that Konstantino Zarkadas, 48, obtained 11 Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program (EIDLP) loans and misused them for personal luxury items, including a down payment on a $1.75 million yacht. - On the heels of Mineola's recent decision to block the selling of marijuana, the Village of Garden City followed suit and opted out of allowing the sale of cannabis products. The Garden City Board of Trustees voted 7-0 against permitting marijuana, with a new law, "Cannabis Prohibition," being added to the Village Code. (Garden City News)
- Residents continue to clean up after three tornadoes touched down on Long Island during a fast-moving storm that swept through Saturday afternoon. The National Weather Service reported that an EF-0 tornado briefly landed in Woodmere before moving on to Uniondale, where it blew a roof off of a two-story colonial building, then Levittown, causing a tree to uproot and crash into the top of a house.
