Here are the top stories in Mineola today:
- A 76-year-old man from Great Neck who was walking in Levittown Thursday afternoon was struck by a car and killed. Nassau County police said that Michael Tucker was walking on Hempstead Turnpike at the intersection of Emerson Avenue when he was hit by a 2022 Hyundai going east, driven by an 82-year-old woman. The driver remained at the scene while Tucker was taken to a local hospital, where he died. (Patch)
- COVID-19 cases are rising across Long Island and New York according to recent state statistics. As of Thursday, the positivity rate in Nassau and Suffolk counties was 8.69 percent compared to 3.13 percent a month earlier on April 5. Some experts assert that the increase may be even higher, as case totals don't include results from at-home testing, which are unreported. (Patch)
- Mother's Day weekend looks to be a rainy one in Mineola and the rest of Long Island. According to the National Weather Service, up to 2 inches of rain is expected to fall by 9 a.m. Sunday morning. The rest of Mother's Day looks to be windy and cool, so you may want to adjust your plans if they include outdoor activities. (Mineola Patch)
