Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. Students and staff at Hofstra University in Hempstead were notified that they must receive a COVID-19 booster shot by next month in a letter from school president Susan Poser on Thursday. Poser said members of Hofstra's community must receive their booster vaccine within seven days of becoming eligible, starting with those who are first eligible on or before Jan. 18, and must upload proof of the shot by that date. Right now, Hofstra is the only university in Nassau County to require proof of vaccine booster for students and staff. (The Island Now)
  2. If you are still looking for a unique holiday present for someone in your life, one of Long Island's art galleries can provide a special, lifetime gift. Gallery 25 on Jericho Turnpike in Mineola has an array of featured artists and custom pieces. They can also frame any existing art or special mementos that you have. (LongIsland.com)
  3. Dr. Robert W. Surplus, 98, a distinguished educator and musician, passed away in Richmond, Kentucky, last week. Surplus worked as a music teacher in Mineola from 1945-47 while studying for an M.A. degree from Columbia University. He later completed his doctorate there and held many positions at universities throughout the U.S. (Scranton Times-Tribune)

The concert was a great success under the direction of Ms. Reagan Stone, our music teacher. The students also created beautiful ornaments in art class with our art teacher, Mrs. Gustafson. Thank you to all who made the evening so beautiful, especially 8th grade student, Ellen, on the flute and Mr. White on the piano. It was the perfect evening to prepare our hearts for Christmas!"
