Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. In the wake of Tuesday's school shooting in Uvalde, Texas that killed 19 children and two adults, the Nassau County Police Department is increasing patrols around all schools in the county, including those in Mineola. In a statement, the police reassured residents and said that there are no specific threats to any schools in Nassau County. (Mineola Patch)
  2. Five employees of Nassau County smoke shops were arrested on Tuesday for illegally selling Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a marijuana derivative, from local stores. Police arrested Jennifer Babaian, 40, at 7 Leaf Clover, located at 92 Old Country Road in Westbury. They also arrested two employees at a shop in Hicksville and two more at a Syosset smoke shop.   3. With the start of the hurricane season on June 1 running through Nov. 30, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicted a 65 percent chance of an above-average hurricane season this year for Long Island and the East Coast with 14 to 21 named storms. Of those storms, 6-10 of them could become hurricanes and 3-6 could be major hurricanes that are category 3 or higher. (Patch)
