Here are the top stories in Mineola today:
- Former Mineola mayor and state senator Jack Martins is looking to return to the senate as the Nassau County Republican Party endorsed him to represent New York's 7th Senate District and run against Democratic incumbent Anna Kaplan. A resident of Old Westbury, Martins previously represented the 7th district (which includes Mineola) from 2011 to 2016 and served as mayor of Mineola from 2003 to 2010. Martins said that changing bail reform laws is one of his top priorities if elected. (The Island 360)
- Veterans' halls and facilities, including AMVETS, American Legion and VFW, can now apply for a new federal grant up to $10,000 to help them get back on their feet financially due to the pandemic. Nassau County Legislature Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello said that he heard from numerous veterans' groups that were having difficulty paying their rent and property taxes due to COVID-19. The money will come from the federal American Rescue and Recovery Act (ARPA) starting April 1, which veterans' halls were not initially eligible for. (Garden City Patch)
- Holocaust survivor Julius Eisenstein of Old Westbury passed away in Hallandale, Florida, at age 102 due to a breakthrough case of COVID-19. After being freed from the Dachau concentration camp in Germany in 1945, Eisenstein moved to Long Island and opened bakeries in Mineola, Roslyn and Manhasset to provide for his family, and then went on to buy buildings in New Hyde Park and Garden City. He is survived by his son, Frederick Eisenstein of Sea Cliff and his daughter, Tobi Soskin of North Hills. (Newsday)
