LI Home Heating Costs Hit New High; Up 29 Percent This Winter

Eligible residents can now apply for financial assistance from NY State. National Grid's estimates are based on higher wholesale gas costs.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Islanders are seeing big jumps on their home heating bills this winter.

This week, home heating oil hit a new high of $6 a gallon. The New York Heating Fuel Prices Dashboard reports that the average for Nassau and Suffolk is now $6.07.

Natural gas costs are also up, but not as steeply.

National Grid predicted in September that residents on LI will see an increase of 29 percent this year, due to higher wholesale gas costs, the company says.

On Nov. 1 Governor Hochul announced that New Yorkers can now apply for the Home Heating Assistance Program (HEAP) to help with their bills. Low and middle-income households and senior citizens can apply with their local social services agencies.

Long Island isn't alone in feeling the hit, which is partly due to the war in Ukraine. Long Island's projected increase is line with national numbers, around a 28 percent jump for those with natural gas, according to the Energy Information Administration.
