Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- As Long Islanders continue to debate "the slap heard around the world" by actor Will Smith to Chris Rock in response to the comedian's joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith at the 2022 Oscars on Sunday, comedy club owner Joe Dolce said he would have made Smith leave. The owner of Governor's in Levittown and Brokerage Comedy Club in Bellmore asserts that it is a comedian's job to poke fun at sensitive topics, and he is concerned that Smith's reaction will give other audience members the greenlight to behave badly. (Bellmore Patch)
- Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman has made a controversial pick for new chairman of struggling, low-rated Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) in East Meadow: millionaire entrepreneur Matthew Bruderman, who was also the top donor to Blakeman's election campaign. Democrats are working quickly to introduce legislation that would allow the New York state governor to pick the new chairman and "depoliticize the operations of the hospital." Bruderman is unfazed by the criticism and said he will donate $1.5 million of his own money to NUMC if he is allowed to become chairman and turn the hospital around. (abc7NY)
- A completely renovated "wow house" has hit the market in East Mineola, asking $850,000: 49 Jerome Ave., between Roslyn Road and Denton Avenue, has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and an array of upscale amenities including a walk-in closet that originally was a third bedroom; a finished basement with a separate outside entrance; a backyard with a pergola and firepit, plus an outdoor sauna; and a new 90-feet long driveway. Where should you invest as a Mineola resident with a $149,000 nest egg? Thanks to a change in the legal code, there's a new investment Mineola residents need to know about. In fact, Bloomberg asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now and many of them chose it.
This may surprise you, but it's fine art.
Growing your nest egg with art isn't new. Wealthy families like the Rockefellers have done it for centuries.
Here's why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2 percent when inflation is >3 percent
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164 percent (1995-2021)
Translation: Art could be one of the best investments for uncertain times.
Luckily for you, we found Masterworks. This revolutionary platform lets you invest in art by Warhol, Monet, Picasso without spending millions.
The best part? Anyone from your area can skip their waitlist*.
