Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. The Mineola Village Board approved several projects in its March 9 meeting, requesting $500,000 in federal grants to be distributed by the Nassau County Office of Community Development. Mineola's plans for the funds are installing LED lighting fixtures in all public streetlights downtown around the LIRR station, Mineola Boulevard, Second Street and Main Street; subsidizing business owners' upgrades to exteriors; and helping seniors and low-income residents to fund home improvements.   2. Also in the March 9 meeting, the Mineola Village Board approved the opening of a new sushi restaurant at 90-18 Jericho Turnpike by Jason Jin, who owns another restaurant in Ridgewood, Queens. This location will be a small eatery with 37 seats, also serving beer, wine and sake, with take-out service as well. (Mineola American)
  3. Claudio Pereira, formerly a partner in Mineola's Lisbon Cafe, has brought Portuguese food to Kings Park with a new restaurant, Gardens of Portugal. Pereira said the restaurant, which is housed in a century old building, is noted for its authentic seafood dishes and Portuguese wine. This spring, Gardens of Portugal will feature outdoor dining for up to 100 people as well as live music on Fridays and Saturdays. (Greater Long Island)
