Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. LIRR commuters are feeling increasingly out in the cold as heated waiting rooms at stations are opening later and closing earlier. The Mineola LIRR Station house is currently being rebuilt, and the only shelter is a temporary wooden protector. Mineola resident Lia Flores told CBS News, "People can get sick. It's freezing outside." (CBS New York)
  2. A messy morning commute is predicted on Long Island for Thursday with light rain changing to light snow and temperatures dropping to freezing, according to the National Weather Service. The forecast calls for less than an inch of snow, but untreated snow covered, and icy roads could become dangerous. There is also a 20 percent chance of more than an inch of snowfall for our area. (Sachem Patch)
  3. Mineola native Phyllis A. Kearns passed away on Jan. 16 at the age of 76, surrounded by her family. Kearns, who was born Phyllis Zgutowicz, was a graduate of Mineola High School and was a member of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church. She worked as a children's clothes designer for Little Ones in Mineola before retiring to Kingston, Pennsylvania. (Wilkes-Barre Citizens Voice)
