Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Tuesday that the new Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) terminal on Manhattan's east side will be named Grand Central Madison, and she said it might open by the end of the year. The terminal will increase LIRR service by 40 percent, officials estimate, with trains running every 15 minutes to Mineola and Hicksville. It will also shorten commute times for people travelling to the east side who now take the subway between Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal. (CBS New York)
- Nassau Community College (NCC) in Garden City, part of SUNY, is entering its 15th year without a budget funding increase from the county, according to President of the Nassau Community College Federation of Teachers Dr. Faren Siminoff. The college has also seen a decrease in state funding for the last decade, leading to less full-time faculty and tuition increases for students. To call for greater resources for NCC, a rally in Mineola is planned for June 27 at 3:30 p.m. in front of the County Legislature building at 1550 Franklin Ave., and you can sign a petition at www.Change.org/launch23for2023 (liherald.com)
- If you have been missing the Nike store at Roosevelt Field in East Garden City, you will soon be able to go to the sportswear brand's new location at the Americana Manhasset. Nike is expected to open sometime this year in the space between Crate & Barrel and Lululemon. (Patch)

Are you a Mineola resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2 percent when inflation is >3 percent
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164 percent (1995-2021)

From my notebook:
- Chaminade High School: "Yesterday the Spring Track and Field's 4 x 800 meter relay team traveled upstate for the last chance to qualify for next weekend's state championship meet. The team needed to run six seconds faster than its best time this season to qualify for next weekend's state meet. Not only did the team qualify for states, but they now hold the fastest time run in the state this year. Go Flyers!" (Chaminade High School via Facebook)
- Family & Children's Association: "Here at FCA, we provide comprehensive support for our community. Often that means balancing many important things at once. June is a big deal here, as it is both Pride Month and Gun Violence Awareness Month. Join us in celebrating the members of the LGBTQIA+ community while also recognizing the impact that gun violence has had on Long Island. Stay tuned for more as we share on both of these!" (Family & Children's Association via Facebook)
- Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence: "100 golfers gathered at Maidstone Golf Club in East Hampton yesterday for LICADD's Annual Tee Off for Teens Golf Invitational! Thank you to Maidstone for hosting and to all of our sponsors and supporters." (Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence via Facebook)
- Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW: ""Over the past decade, about 60 percent of newly organizing workers were women... For women, unions can be a pathway to equal pay. Unionization tends to benefit women more than men, eliminating factors that fuel pay disparity such as secrecy around salaries." (Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW via Facebook)
- Island Harvest: "Did you know that June 1-7 is CPR & AED Awareness Week? Would you know what to do if a colleague, friend, or loved one went into sudden cardiac arrest? Do you know where the closest AED is? Take 90 seconds to learn how to save a life at https://bit.ly/3aeQcjs" (Island Harvest via Facebook)
