Here are the top stories in Mineola today:
- Nassau County residents expressed strong reactions to the Supreme Court's decision on Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade and allow states to ban abortion, although that right will be upheld in New York State. Shoppers at Lidl in Merrick came down on both sides of the decision, though all were shocked that the ruling that has been in effect for 50 years would be no more. (News12 Long Island)
- Local residents who support legally carrying guns applauded another big Supreme Court decision this week: to kill a New York law that requires people to show a special need (such as owning a business) to lawfully carry a gun in public. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, trying to reassure gun control advocates, said, "those who should not have handguns will not have access to them." (CBS News)
- At least 15 open houses are scheduled for this weekend in Mineola. A co-op studio apartment in Birchwood Court (Unit 4A) is available for $175,000, with a low monthly maintenance fee that includes all utilities except electric (open house Sunday from 12:30-2 p.m.). House-seekers can take a look at 116 Millington Place, a 2,400-square-foot Colonial with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms in the Park section, asking $848,000 (open house Saturday from 1:30-3:30 p.m.).
