Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. A Nassau County man allegedly threatened to shoot people inside Cohen Children's Medical Center in Little Neck, Queens, according to the NYPD. Investigators said that Thomas Saxton, 34, possessed several ghost handguns, bulletproof vests, 15 extended magazines and 1,000 rounds of ammunition in his car and his home. Saxton faces charges including menacing, harassment and criminal possession of a weapon. (CBS New York)
  2. Democratic Congresswoman Kathleen Rice, who represents NY's 4th Congressional District that includes Mineola, announced she is not running for re-election this year. Rice has served in Congress since 2015 and will leave office when her term ends next January. She currently sits on House committees for Homeland Security, Energy and Commerce. (Garden City Patch)
  3. New York State Sen. Anna M. Kaplan (D-North Hills) held the Fourth Annual Black History Month Celebration on Zoom to honor local African American trailblazers and student rising-stars. The top awards were given to Hon. Viviana Russell, former Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman, and Dr. Abigail Smith-Lockett, program coordinator, In-District Programs at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech. Twelve students were named 2022 Student Awardees, including Stephanie Bell of Mineola High School and Alexus Howard of Carle Place High School. (The New York State Senate)
