Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. After the recent death of student Hasan Suleman from The Wheatley School in a car accident on Glen Cove Road between I.U. Willets Road and Hillside Avenue, officials are calling for measures to increase safety on the dangerous stretch of road in Old Westbury. Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan is demanding an immediate traffic study of the road, which is often filled with commercial trucks and is without traffic lights or a median divider. Old Westbury Mayor Edward Novick said that he has been trying for years to have the road reviewed and analyzed, but there is a backlog of 1,300 unanswered cases in the Nassau County Department of Public Works. (CBS New York)
  2. Meadow Drive School in the Mineola Union Free School District donated children's pajamas and socks to an orphanage in Poland that is helping refugee children from Ukraine. The pre-K to 2nd grade school, located in Albertson, contributed 369 pairs of pajamas and 112 packages of socks, in addition to some toiletries, to refugee children. The Manessis family hosted the drive because they have a connection to the orphanage and wanted to help during this crisis. (Mineola American)
  3. Millions of pets are taken in by animal shelters each year but only half of them are adopted, according to ASPCA data. Several adorable cats are now available from Advocat Rescue in Mineola, including Cuddly Michie, Velvety Vanya and Noble Nikko. Could one of them find their forever home with you? (Mineola Patch)
