Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- A man was arrested Monday evening after returning to his home in South Floral Park with a loaded handgun, according to police. They were alerted by the Nassau County Mobile Crisis Intervention Team of a potential incident, arrived outside the residence and interviewed Khalil Dapries, 31, who was acting cagey and secretive. Police made him leave the car and recovered a handgun with five bullets. (Patch)
- Students at the Henry Viscardi School in Albertson for children with disabilities visited the Nassau County Courthouse in Mineola for the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that was signed 32 years ago. They met with Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly, whose son is developmentally disabled, and expressed gratitude to those who fought for civil rights for disabled people. Thanks to the ADA, companies must provide modifications for people with mental and physical conditions so that they can be employed and part of everyday life. (CBS New York)
- Adding to the list of accolades for NYU Langone Hospitals in Manhattan and Mineola, U.S. News & World Report named it the best hospital in New York state for 2022-23, particularly in specialties including cancer, neurology, and obstetrics and gynecology. - Music & Memory: "It's hard to believe it's been over 10 years since the Henry video went viral, capturing the attention of news outlets worldwide and culminating in a Sundance Award winning documentary, 'Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory.' Henry Dryer, who loved jazz and Cab Calloway, and whose favorite song was Nat King Cole's 'Unforgettable,] transforms in the video while listening to his favorite music, revealing himself as a passionate believer in the power of music, even as he is brought back by the very same songs he loves so much." - Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW: "We're here in Atlanta for the 24th Quadrennial Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) Convention! We heard from a lot of great speakers during the first day of the convention, including Mayor of Atlanta André Dickens, United States Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh, Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, organizing workers at the Bessemer, Alabama Amazon facility, and RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum!" (Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW via Facebook)
- Family & Children's Association: "How cute is this?! Music therapists from Molloy College's The Rebecca Center will be providing weekly music therapy sessions to the Pre-K cohort of FCA's Lynn Vanderhall Nursery Co-op throughout the summer." (Family & Children's Association via Facebook)
- Nassau County Police Department: "Wanted for multiple bias incidents. Please contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers if you have information regarding these incidents.
