Man Charged With Burglarizing Mineola Home, Assaulting Officer

The Mineola man resisted arrest, which caused an officer to fracture his hand Tuesday, police said.

A man was charged with burglary, assault and resisting arrest after police said he was found hiding in a Mineola home Tuesday afternoon.

According to authorities, a 64-year-old woman heard noises and saw a man in the basement of her 9th Avenue home at 5:15 p.m. The woman fled the house and called police.

Police arrived to the scene to find Jose Almendares, 35, of Mineola, hiding on the stairs leading from the basement to the main floor, police said.

Almendares struggled briefly with police, which caused one officer to fracture his hand, police said.

Almendares was charged with first degree burglary, second degree assault and resisting arrest.

He was arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
