MINEOLA, NY — Two men who had weapons in Mineola were arrested on Thursday, Nassau police said.

Palo Howe, 44, of Hempstead, approached a telephone pole near Mineola Boulevard and Old Country Road when he removed a large piece of wood and began chasing Dwayne Smith, 34, of Massapequa around 6:30 p.m, police said.

Police investigated and said both men "fit the description" of a robbery reported through 911 on a NICE bus. Smith had brandished a knife on the bus prior to what detectives had seen, police said.

Howe and Smith were both charged with second-degree menacing and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Their arraignment was scheduled for Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
