Man Pleads Not Guilty to Month-Long Burglary Spree in Nassau County

The serial burglar was arrested in June after he broke into a home and the residents locked him in their basement, the DA reports.

An alleged serial burglar who struck several Nassau County homes during the month of June was arraigned in front a grand jury on a 12-count indictment Monday, acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas reports.

Carlos Morinville, 22, of New Cassel, pleaded not guilty to first degree burglary, eight counts of second degree burglary, fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon, second degree menacing and resisting arrest.

Morinville was arrested on June 29 when he broke into a New Cassel home, but was shoved down the basement stairs by a 73-year-old male resident and was locked down there until police arrived, the DA reports. Read the full story here.

According to the DA, Morinville is believed have committed eight local burglaries from June 4 to June 29, including:

  • June 4- Cash and jewelry were stolen from a Westbury apartment.
  • June 10- Property and electronics were stolen from a New Cassel property.
  • June 11- Cash, jewelry and electronics were stolen from a New Cassel home.
  • June 13- Computer products were stolen from a Westbury home.
  • June 19- A watch and computer products were stolen from a Westbury residence.
  • June 22- A video game system, a bike, clothing, a watch and other items were stolen from a Westbury home.
  • June 25- Jewelry was stolen from a Westbury home.

“The defendant allegedly went on a month-long burglary spree terrorizing the communities of Westbury and New Cassel,” Singas said in a statement. “Thankfully, a brave senior citizen detained the defendant long enough for police officers to arrest him.”

Morinville could face up to 5 to 25 years in prison if convicted of the top charge.

He was remanded for a violation of probation on another matter and bail on the indictment charges was set at $200,000 bond or $100,000 cash. He is due back in court on Nov. 13.
