Man Wields Knife At Long Island Hospital; Violent With Officers: Cops

Martin McCarthy faces charges that include menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

MINEOLA, NY — A Hempstead was taken into custody for menacing a police officer at NYU Langone Hospital, authorities said.

Martin McCarthy, 49, is accused of threatening hospital employees with a knife just before 3 a.m. on Friday, police said.

Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but McCarthy did not drop the weapon. They used a Taser to disarm him, police said.

McCarthy was placed under arrest, but continued to be violent and combative, authorities said.

He is charged with three counts of second-degree menacing, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of menacing a police officer. He was scheduled for arraignment on Saturday.
