Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. A Uniondale man won $10 million this week with a lottery scratch-off ticket — and it isn't the first time. Juan Hernandez claimed the top prize on Tuesday in the New York Lottery's $10 million deluxe scratch-off game with a ticket he bought at Stop & Shop at 150 Fulton Ave. in Hempstead. Hernandez opted to receive a lump sum payment of $6,510,000, but he said he is still trying to spend the $10 million he won from a New York scratch-off lottery ticket in 2019. (abc7NY)
  2. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced that the county will be honoring former New York Islanders Captain Clark Gillies, who passed away in January, by illuminating the dome of the Executive and Legislative Building at 1550 Franklin Ave. in Mineola in blue and orange (the Islander colors) this weekend. Gillies not only led the Islanders to win four straight Stanley Cups in the 1980s, but he was a devoted philanthropist who started the Clark Gillies Foundation to help children who are physically, mentally or financially challenged. 3. The Town of North Hempstead, in partnership with St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, are offering health screenings to seniors as part of its Project Independence aging-in-place initiative. At seven locations this spring, the St. Francis Outreach Bus will provide screenings including blood pressure exams, as well as blood tests for cholesterol and diabetes, according to Town officials. Upcoming screening dates in our area are Tuesday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fuschillo Park, Carle Road at Broadmoor Lane, Carle Place; and Thursday, April 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North Hempstead "Yes We Can" Community Center, 141 Garden St., Westbury.
