Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. Edward Mangano, the former Nassau County Executive who was convicted in 2019 of public corruption charges, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. Mangano and his wife, Linda, reportedly accepted bribes from restauranteur Harendra Singh, and in turn pressured the Town of Oyster Bay to back $20 million in loans for Singh. (Garden City Patch)
  2. A 23-year-old man from Queens has been convicted for helping steal more than $1 million from North Shore homes in gated communities in 2018. Andres Zapata was found guilty during a jury trial on seven counts of second-degree burglary for his role in burglarizing or attempting to burglarize eight homes in Old Westbury, Manhasset, Jericho and Woodbury. Zapata and his co-defendants chose communities with only one entrance and exit to make it easier to flee, according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. When sentenced, Zapata faces 15 years in jail for each count of burglary. (Mineola Patch)
  3. Nassau County lawmakers are introducing a bill to deter the stealing of catalytic converters from vehicles, a crime that has skyrocketed with 348 reported thefts in our county so far this year compared with 40 from the same period last year. The bill will require scrap metal dealers to ask for the year, make, model and VIN number from the car it came from and documentation from the car's owner in order to accept the valuable car part.
