Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. A Brooklyn man thought to be responsible for several burglaries at Mineola businesses has been arrested, according to Nassau County police. Officers responded to a call for a burglary in process Monday evening at 90-13 Jericho Turnpike, the site of A M NY Inc. lottery store, and found Emmanuel Rosario, 32, hiding in the ceiling. Police believe he is responsible for three other burglary and criminal mischief incidents in Mineola that day: at Mamma Gina's Pizza at 61 2nd St.; BP Gas Station at 91 Jericho Turnpike; and Venezia's Garden Center at 110 Jericho Turnpike. (Mineola Patch)
  2. The Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) bus system is adding six electric, battery-powered buses to its fleet by the end of 2022. These are just the first of hundreds electric buses that are planned in order to lower emissions, with a goal of converting the entire 275-bus fleet. Nassau Legislature Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello also pointed out, "Each vehicle will save over $125,000 in maintenance charges and over $400,000 in fuel savings over a 12-year lifespan." (CBS New York)
  3. Mineola Memorial Library has released on its website a new library scrapbook, consisting of photos, news stories and other documents from the 1950s to the 1970s by Edwin Merara Jr., the library's circulation clerk. Mineola history buffs can find it under the Local History menu and catch a glimpse of our town's past. (Mineola American)

I have called the water department twice and both times I was received by the supervisor of the water department, Mr. Jim Martin. He was extremely standoffish, rude and downright disrespectful when I asked when it would be fixed. With the water rates going up wouldn't they fix this major issue sooner? Has anyone else had issues with the water department or the water department personnel?" (Patch)
