Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. A Mineola man has been arrested and charged with criminal mischief for allegedly intentionally damaging several vehicles, including those belonging to the Nassau County Police Department. Manuel C. Reis, 59, is accused of putting tire spikes in the street that damaged cars near Nassau County police offices in Mineola on five separate incidents between May 11 and July 11. Reis will be arraigned this Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead. (Mineola Patch)
  2. With the huge uptick of cars stolen in Nassau County this year, officials report that 75 percent of those vehicles are found in Newark, New Jersey, as part of an organized car theft ring. Now, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder are working with the Newark Police Department and the U.S. Marshal's Office to hunt down and arrest the perpetrators. Many of them turn out to be teenagers recruited by the crime ring, because they face lesser consequences if caught. (WABC-TV)
  3. While Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, is often referred to as the birthplace of aviation, those in the know say Long Island is the true cradle of aviation - and right here in our own backyards. In 1909, Glenn H. Curtiss flew an airplane he designed for 25 miles from Mineola over the Hempstead Plains, deemed a perfect spot for its long, flat stretch of grasslands with very few trees.
