Here are the top stories in Mineola today:
- A 70-year-old man from Mineola has been indicted in a hit-and-run accident that killed rapper Nicky Minaj's father, Robert Maraj, last February. Court documents show that Charles Polevich is charged with leaving the scene of an auto accident that resulted in death and tampering with evidence. Polevich, who splits his time between Mineola and Guam, is believed to have struck 64-year-old Maraj while he was walking along Roslyn Road; he then reportedly got out of his car and asked Maraj if "he was OK" while he lay in the street before getting back in his car and leaving. - Two victims of a deadly car accident on Nov. 28 on Marcus Avenue in New Hyde Park have been identified by Nassau County police: Parshotam Kaur, 71, and her daughter, Pallavi Saini, 39, both of Glen Oaks, and who were pronounced dead on the scene. The 41-year-old male driver of the car was taken to a hospital following the crash and remained in critical condition. (The Island Now)
- Former attorney and councilman for the Town of Hempstead Joe Ra passed away in late November from COVID-19. Ra is the father of current state assemblyman Ed Ra, who represents Nassau County's 19th district. A member of Town of Hempstead government for nearly four decades, Ra lived in Franklin Square with his wife of 35 years, Joanne, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Edward, Joseph and Jillian of Franklin Square and his four grandsons. (The Island Now)
