Here are the top stories in Mineola today:
- A Mineola man threatened a woman passing by and then assaulted a Nassau County police officer, resulting in his arrest. Peter Belton, 29, was standing in a parking lot on Mineola Boulevard at 1:55 a.m. on Dec. 7 when he lunged toward a woman walking by and threatened to stab her, according to police. A few minutes later an officer found Belton walking on Second Street and tried to stop him, but Belton punched him in the face. More officers arrived to the scene, subdued Belton and placed him under arrest; he was charged with third-degree menacing, second-degree assault and resisting arrest. (Mineola Patch)
- Rob Walker, the former Chief Deputy County Executive who worked with disgraced former County Executive Edward Mangano, was sentenced today to 18 months in prison for obstruction of justice. Walker, 43, of Hicksville, pleaded guilty to charges, which included accepting a $5,000 bribe from a contractor who was doing work for Nassau County in 2014 and then lying to the FBI to cover up his crime. Walker will also have to pay more than $10,000 in fines and perform 2,000 hours of community service. (Mineola Patch)
- NYU Langone Hospital in Mineola was honored with a Top Hospital Award by the Leapfrog Group, which used data from its annual hospital survey to make their selections. NYU Langone was one of 72 teaching hospitals named among 149 top hospitals in the U.S. The hospitals were chosen for their excellence in several areas of patient care and quality standards, including surgery outcomes, medication safety and infection rates.
