Here are the top stories in Mineola today:
- Following the deaths of two NYC police officers, Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss called on state politicians to better protect citizens and police officers against crime at last week's Mineola Board of Trustees meeting. Strauss said, "How many more innocent people — people like you and me who for whatever reason take a chance and go into the city only to be robbed, assaulted, pushed in front of a train or slashed — before our state lawmakers realize they need to change things?" (The Island Now)
- A Bellerose Terrace smoke shop was robbed Saturday morning by two men and a woman, according to Nassau County police. An alleged perpetrator walked behind the counter at the It's Lit Smoke Shop at 225-06 Jamaica Ave. and forced the male employee into a back room, punched him in the face and handcuffed him. Then the three suspects took cash from the register and some merchandise. Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. (Garden City Patch)
- A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that KN95 and N95 masks are the best face coverings to protect against COVID-19. The study found that people who wear N95 and KN95 masks are 83 percent less likely to contract the virus and test positive for COVID-19, while those who wear regular surgical masks are 66 percent less likely to test positive and those who wear cloth masks are 56 percent less likely to test positive.
