Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island in Mineola had plans to add a 230-foot-tall building to its location, but Village of Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss shot down the proposal. The new building was part of a billion-dollar investment NYU Langone wanted to make in its facilities, which they said were needed improvements for a modern hospital. Strauss, who also happens to be the assistant vice president of corporate security at Northwell Health in New Hyde Park, said he told officials at NYU Langone that he fully understands all about modernization needs, but that they could not do it in Mineola. 2. Mystique Hookah Lounge at 973 Old Country Road in Westbury is being sued by a Brooklyn man who claims the nightspot is responsible for an attack he endured that resulted in a slash on his left forearm that required surgery. Jamel Johns went to the hookah lounge on Jan. 12, 2019, and was attacked by a group of drunk people, according to the complaint he filed in Kings County Supreme Court. He alleges that the lounge is responsible for serving visibly drunk patrons' alcohol, for not hiring security personnel to keep patrons safe, and for not providing proper training to its staff. 3. Jen DeSena, the Town of North Hempstead supervisor-elect from Manhasset, has appointed a 17-member transition team to guide her as she forms a new administration and takes office on Jan. 1, 2022. The team includes professionals who work in constituent services, finance, intermunicipal coordination, legislative affairs, procurement, and public information. DeSena is the first Republican nominee to win the office of Town of North Hempstead Supervisor since 1987. (Mineola American)

From my notebook:

  • Chaminade High School - Mineola: "On Monday, the hockey program participated in 'Trees for Troops.' Our students assist with loading them onto aircraft at JFK airport." (Facebook)
  • St. Aidan School - Williston Park: "Ms. Cornils' Class 2-1 celebrated the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. They created pictures of St. Anne holding Baby Mary." (Facebook)
  • Island Harvest: "Starting Jan. 1, 2022, the NYS Food Scraps Recycling law goes into effect. The law requires businesses and institutions that generate an annual average of two tons of unused food per week to donate excess edible food and recycle all remaining food scraps if they are within 25 miles of an organic's recycler. Right now, the law impacts restaurants, grocery stores, hotels and motels, colleges and universities, malls, event centers and other large generators of food scraps." (Facebook)
  • Hellenic Relief Foundation: "The #HellenicReliefFoundation and its partner organization held their monthly distribution mid-November at their headquarters in #Athens, in partnership with the Social Committee of the #Athenian Society. The food packages, provided to financially weakened families and single households, contained pasta, rice, flour, orzo, oil, and more. In total, around 360 food packages were distributed, along with gift cards for food purchases, compliments of the N. Konstantopoulou Group." (Facebook)
