Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- Mineola has been named the 19th highest earning "city"(or rather town) in New York by news outlet Stacker, which used data from the U.S. Census Bureau to compile its rankings. Towns were ranked by their five-year estimate median household income and Mineola's was found to be $100,891, which is 60.5 percent above the national median. Next-door neighbor Garden City was named the third highest-earning city in New York with a median household income of $174,886. (Stacker)
- A former Commissioner of Public Safety for the Town of Hempstead, Thomas DeMaria, has been indicted by a grand jury on charges that he directed a subordinate to void a ticket of a Town of Hempstead colleague in 2018. According to the Nassau County District Attorney's office, 67-year-old DeMaria of Floral Park allegedly told his employee to make a parking ticket of a colleague's daughter disappear. DeMaria is due back in court on Jan. 10. 2022, and if convicted, faces a maximum of 364 days of jail time. (Press Release Desk)
- Mineola's Chaminade High School has implemented a unique, two-year financial literacy course required for juniors and seniors that aims to prepare students for the real world. The class is sponsored by the financial firm Bloomberg and focuses on investing, saving for retirement and preventing credit card debt.
