- A "bomb cyclone," or what meteorologists say is a winter hurricane, is headed our way Saturday on Long Island, first bringing soaking rain, then gusty winds. The rain will strengthen around sunrise with about an inch predicted from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. After that, the wind is the story. "There is a strong chance for an advisory level wind event with sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts to 45 to 50 mph," according to the New York office of the National Weather Service.
