Mineola to Renovate Spray Pools in Parks

Renovations to bring pools to grade level and make drainage easier.

The various spray pools at each of the village parks in Mineola will be receiving construction makeovers after the Mineola Village Board approved bids during its meeting on May 15 at the village hall.

“They’ve fallen into disrepair over the years, had large cracks in them,” superintendent of public works Tom Rini said. “We finally had to stop allowing usage surfaces where they’ll... children and people trying to use them will get hurt.”

The bids were approved from the following companies: Memorial Park (20’x20’) – J & L Modern Concrete ($6,250); Wilson Park (30’x30’) –  J & L Modern Concrete ($19,462.50). Funding for the renovations would come from the unreserved fund balance.

“A lot of times what happens is the kids like to take rocks, stones and leaves and cover the drain hole and then allow the water to fill up and in some cases it’s over a foot in them,” Rini said.

The village is changing the depths of the spray pools and raising the pools up almost to grade level. It would also bring the drains to a central drain with a one to one-and-a-half-inch pitch.

“Literally it would just be a spray pool, no longer able to retain water and have any risk of injury,” Rini said.

At Wilson Park the village would also use a coping stone and brick paver walkway surrounding the pool. The color of the pavers would be brown and beige to match the playground and in the pool there would be a “brushed” concrete surface to prevent skidding according to Rini.
