Mineola Village Board Notebook: April 18
Other news from the April 18 village board meeting.
The Mineola held a meeting on Wednesday, April 11. Here are some of the things you may have missed.
Beebe Road Repaving Request
- Beebe Road resident Tom McManus requested that something be done about his block of roadway which he defines as unsafe due to numerous layers of asphalt peeling away due to heavy traffic, especially from trucks.
- His specific area of concern on Beebe Road runs from Jackson Avenue north to Jericho Turnpike by .
- “The only bicycle going down that block should be a mountain bike or a BMX bike because the road is just full of divots and paved repair work over repair work over repair work,” he said.
- The village conducts a regular study of its roads through the engineering firm of Dvirka & Bartilucci, which grades the structure of the roadways.
- stated that he asked Superintendent of Public Works Tom Rini to reach out to National Grid about planned work in the area on roads the village plans to have repaved this year as well as Beebe Road.
- “National Grid said that within 2-3 years they’re going to do some work on our road,” Mayor Strauss said. “I’m not telling you that you’re going to wait 2-3 years because of the condition of the road that it’s in, but I can’t repave the entire road or do anything major, structurally or curbside to that road because of that issue.”
- Rini said that the specific areas are experiencing “scaling,” a condition where different layers of asphalt that were not properly adhered are peeling away and are difficult to remedy because the layers are not that deep.
- “There’s nothing to adhere to,” he said. “So what happens is... over times as the trucks go because it can’t hold to itself, it starts to break up and you get the pebbles.”
- This year Latham, Andrews and Beebe were considered, but Latham and Andrews were considered in worse shape structurally than Beebe Road, that is the underlying roadbed was still structurally sound.
- Also, another layer cannot be added to the road because of the “minimum curb reveal” due to the number of layers already placed and would cause cars to scrape coming out of driveways.
- Rini said that he would speak to the engineers about the section of roadway to see what solutions could mitigate the problem.
