The Mineola  held a meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 10. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Historical Society Roof

  • A change order was approved for the contract for the of the and the with Atlas Restoration.
  • According to Superintendent of Public Works Tom Rini, the change is to add the roof of the Mineola Historical Society building in to the project, which “was not contemplated” as being part of the original project.
  • The building has had “minor” leaks and the produced a significant amount of damage to the roof and leaks.
  • “They got a good amount of water,” Rini said. “Once we got the roofer here I wanted him to take a look at that to see whether it was something that we could install some insulation and then go over it and still get a guarantee.”
  • The manufacturer of the roofs was also brought out and offered a 10-year guarantee for roofing over the existing roof.
  • The price for the work would be $13,000.

Union Grievance Dismissed

  • Following a recommendation by an independent hearing officer, the village board unanimously dismissed a grievance from the United Public Service Employees Union (UPSEU) for the elimination of the position of the secretary to the design board.
  • The union had appealed the decision to eliminate the position to the village board, who designated an independent hearing officer to recommend a course of action following a hearing.
  • The officer’s decision was that the grievance be dismissed.
  • “The union did not prove that the rights of the employee were violated,” Village attorney John Spellman said. “The village had the right to eliminate the position. They claimed it violated the civil service law, didn’t give her a hearing, but it had nothing to do with her, it had to do with streamlining government.”

Other Board News

  • will use the parking lot at Wilson Park on Union Avenue to hold a child safety seat checkpoint on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. as part of National Baby Safety Month. Members of the state police will be present to advise residents on how to properly install child safety seats and will check to make sure that all current safety seats are installed properly.
  • Village Clerk Joe Scalero will attend the annual NYCOM (New York Conference of Mayors) Fall Training School for City and Village Officials from September 19 - 22. According to Scalero the conference is valuable to give updates on changes in state law, specifically election laws and the . Scalero has not attended the conference in the previous 2 years.
  • The will make use of the auditorium to hold auditions for performers for the on September 8-9 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The street fair will be held on Mineola Boulevard and Second Street will be held on September 25.
  • The village has also posted notices for the following positions: two laborers in the highway department, one full-time clerical assistant in the department of public works administrative offices, one full-time clerical assistant in village hall and one full-time accounting position in the treasurer’s office. All the positions are compliant with civil-service requirements.
  • A total of $564,667.22 in 2010-11 year-end intra-departmental budget transfers were made from the general fund to various budgetary lines.
