Happy Thursday, Mineola, and happy Veteran's Day. Here's everything you need to know to get this day started. Here's what's happening around town today.

First, today's weather:

Some sun, then clouds. High: 60, low: 56.

Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. The Nassau County Board of Elections will not start counting absentee and affidavit ballots in the Nov. 2 election until next week. Town of Hempstead Councilman Bruce Blakeman is still declaring victory in the race for Nassau County Executive, even though he has not yet defeated incumbent Laura Curran. Blakeman is leading by 11,000 votes, but there are still more than 22,000 absentee and 1,200 affidavit ballots to be counted. (The Island Now)
  2. A Texas woman was arrested and charged with stealing almost $1 million in prize money from her Glen Cove cousin who held a winning New York State Lottery scratch-off ticket. The victim wanted to remain anonymous and asked his cousin to cash in the prize on his behalf, but the defendant showed him forged paperwork saying the prize was worth only $20,000. (Press Release Desk)
  3. The Mineola Historical Society placed its first marker in the village late last month, honoring the FCA Children's Home in what is now the Mineola Athletic Association Baseball Fields on Willis Avenue. The Children's Home opened in Mineola in the mid-1800s as a first-of-its-kind compassionate home for unwanted children on Long Island. (Mineola American)
