While a few residents were overheard uttering disparaging remarks about and the odd suggestion on reducing taxes by restricting consumers to shop within Nassau County, the majority of residents’ concerns were a collaboration of the health department and department of public works, including the West Nile Virus.
A case of the disease claimed the life of a 71 year old Oyster Bay man Wednesday and another nine individuals have contracted the disease this year.
Nassau County has begun spraying pesticides in areas of the county in order to control the population of mosquitoes which carry the virus.
Trucks carrying the pesticide were the communities of Rockville Centre, Lynbrook, Malverne, Lakeview, Franklin Square and on Wednesday. The communities of West Hempstead, Valley Stream and North Valley Stream are reportedly scheduled to be sprayed on Thursday.
During spraying children and pregnant women should remain indoors and at least a half hour afterward.
The public is also advised to use bug spray, avoid outdoor activities after dusk, wear pants and long sleeves and rid their yards of standing water, which mosquitoes may use as spawning grounds.
