Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. Drivers may soon see a drop in gas prices as Nassau County announced it will temporarily suspend its gasoline tax for anything above $3 a gallon, which is estimated to be about 5 cents per gallon. However, it may take until June to go into effect because that is the next time Nassau is permitted to change tax rates. (WABC-TV)
  2. A $25 million budget for 2022-23 in the Village of Mineola was approved by the Mineola Board of Trustees at its meeting last week. The estimated tax levy is $14.2 million, which is an increase of 1.88 percent from the current year, according to Village Treasurer Giacomo Ciccone. That means the average tax bill for Mineola residents is $1,670, with an average increase of $31 per homeowner. (The Island 360)
  3. If you think "Mineola" is a mouthful, imagine if our town kept the original name Miniolagamika. That is what the land was called back in 1858, and the Native American name translates to "a pleasant village." Also, neighboring Carle Place was originally known as "Carle's Place" for the first man who built a large estate there. (LongIsland.com)
