New Cassel Burglary Suspect Found Hiding Under Car by Canine Unit

The 19-year-old was arrested Friday for removing a money safe from a home, police said.

A 19-year-old man was arrested Friday for stealing a safe from a New Cassel home in June, police said.

According to authorities, Joshua Johnson, of New Cassel, was seen removing a safe containing an undetermined amount of cash from a Maplewood Drive home at 10 p.m. on Thursday, June 18.

Authorities located Johnson on Friday and he fled on foot northbound when he was approached by officers, police said.

The suspect was found hiding under a car on Juniper Street by members of the Canine Unit with assistance from Third Precinct and Bureau of Special Operations officers, police said.

Johnson was arrested and charged with second degree burglary, violation of probation and fifth degree criminal possession of marijuana.

He was arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.
