Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- A former NYPD officer was sentenced in Mineola to up to four years in jail for criminal possession of a firearm. David Afanador, 41, of Long Beach, pleaded guilty to firing several shots into the Atlantic Ocean while drinking alcohol with friends on the beach, and despite his NYPD card being marked "no firearms." (Patch)
- Another weekend in Mineola means two days of at least 15 open houses with homes selling at record highs. For condos, there is a 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom unit with a balcony at the Jackson Terrace Condos with low HOA dues asking $399,000 (open house Saturday from noon to 1:30 p.m.). For houses, 219 Arlington St. is available for $849,000 with a semi-inground pool in the East Williston School District (open house Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.). (Redfin)
- Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan is filing a bill called "Alexandra's Law" that would require local beaches to post rip current danger signs and flags, as well as have county-side education in classrooms. The bill is in honor of Garden City High School graduate Alexandra De Moura, who tragically drowned in a rip current in Mexico while she was just standing in waist-high water. (CBS New York)
