Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- NYU Langone Hospital Long Island in Mineola reported to Newsday that more than 300 of its staff were out sick with COVID-19 as of Jan. 1. The rapidly spreading omicron and delta variants have infected health care workers across the country. According to The New York Times database, the U.S. reported more than 489,000 new cases as of Dec. 29, roughly twice the amount of the worst days from last winter's surge. (Becker's Hospital Review)
- The Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) just released its list of the top 10 most dangerous intersections of 2021 with the highest number of auto accidents. Although those intersections are located in six different towns, they are all notably where the Long Island Expressway (LIE) and its service roads meet local roads. Two LIE intersections from Roslyn Heights with roads that lead to Mineola made the list: Number 6 is Willis Avenue and number 7 is Mineola Avenue, with 77 crashes and 68 crashes respectively. The NCPD will be beefing up traffic enforcement at these intersections to help avoid crashes. (Glen Cove Patch)
- Students at many schools across Long Island — including the Mineola Union Free School District — returned to the classroom on Monday, even though COVID-19 cases continue to climb. However, four Nassau County school districts, including the nearby Westbury Union Free School District, are having remote learning for the first week of January due to the COVID-19 spike over the holidays. To make in-person learning safer, the Manhasset Union Free School District distributed 3,000 at-home COVID test kits to students. (News12 Long Island)
