🌱Parish Employee Child Pornographer + Time for Jury Duty Raise

The latest from Mineola, delivered right to your inbox — for free!

Happy Friday, neighbors! Let's get you all caught up to start today off on an informed note.

First, today's weather:

Times of clouds and sun. High: 77, low: 65.

Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. A 59-year-old Freeport man, the former choir director and co-director of music for St. Agnes Parish in Rockville Centre, was sentenced to 6 years in prison for receiving child pornography. The 24-year parish employee was found to be sharing images of child pornography on the instant messaging app Kik. (Mineola Patch)
  2. In Mineola, Acting Nassau County District Attorney Joyce A. Smith called for an increase in juror compensation to $15 an hour to improve the fairness of trials. Currently, New York jurors receive $40 a day for service, while Federal jurors receive $50 per day. Many people who are called for jury duty are faced with losing essential income, deterring them from participating and affecting the diversity of juries. (Press Release Desk)
  3. Nassau County could get a new area code in addition to 516, and the New York State Public Service Commission wants the public's input. A petition says that available 516 area code numbers will run out by the end of 2023. (CBS New York)
