Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- Peloton, the trendy exercise bike and treadmill company, will permanently close its Port Washington office on Harbor Road on May 9, eliminating all 50 jobs, according to a Work Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing. Peloton has another Long Island office in Farmingdale that will remain open, although 62 employees will be laid off there. Peloton's sales rose during the pandemic, but then quickly fell once gyms reopened. (Port Washington Patch)
- Siela Bynoe, Nassau County legislator for the 2nd Congressional District since 2014, announced she will run to represent the 4th Legislative District, a seat that is being vacated by Kathleen Rice. Bynoe, a Democrat, has advocated for police reform in Nassau County as well as creating more oversight on spending. The 4th Congressional District represents Mineola as well as many neighboring communities including Garden City and Westbury. (Garden City Patch)
- Wilhelmina "Willa" Vollmerhausen, 91, passed away on Feb. 16 in Bethpage. The devoted wife and mother worked full-time for a graphics art distributor in Mineola. The owner of the company then purchased several local newspapers and Vollmerhausen became the billing and advertising coordinator, a position she held until she retired in 1991. Vollmerhausen's family will receive visitors Thursday, Feb. 24, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Arthur F. White Funeral Home, Inc., 234 Broadway, Bethpage. The funeral service is Friday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Bethpage. Interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale. (Legacy.com)
