Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. A person was struck by a Long Island Rail Road train near the Mineola station Tuesday night at 6:37 p.m., according to the MTA. Details about the victim's identity and condition have not been released yet. The MTA reported that no one on the train was injured. After the accident, delays on the LIRR in both directions continued late Tuesday on the Oyster Bay and Port Jefferson lines. (Newsday)
  2. A 22-year-old man was arrested on Monday for a botched robbery attempt on Dec. 7 at the Roosevelt Field Mall in East Garden City when he was trying to board a plane and flee the country. Two weeks ago, Bernardo Dezil of Freeport was attempting to steal clothing from the Clientele store in the mall when he was stopped by employees. He pulled out a handgun and struck a man in the face. The man was able to wrestle the gun away from Dezil before he ran off. NYPD officers caught Dezil this week at the airport and placed him under arrest; Nassau County officers then took him into custody. (Mineola Patch)
  3. In another shoplifting incident at Roosevelt Field, a Hempstead woman was arrested Dec. 16 after attempting to leave the department store Nordstrom without paying for merchandise, according to Nassau County police. A Nordstrom employee confronted 36-year-old Shatara Coney, who then repeatedly punched and bit the worker one time before being subdued. Coney was detained until she was arrested at approximately 7:55 p.m. She was charged with robbery, assault, petit larceny and criminal possession of a controlled substance because she was carrying a pipe that held a "white powdery substance believed to be crack cocaine," according to police.
