Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. A Freeport man was indicted on felony charges in Mineola for allegedly breeding and selling pit bulls for dogfighting. Lonnie Poindexter, 54, pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance. Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said in a statement: "Dogfighting is barbaric and cruel, and those who partake in the blood sport are often linked to gang and drug activity." (Patch)
  2. The row of empty storefronts on Warner Avenue facing the Roslyn LIRR station will finally be transformed after three years of waiting for developers to secure a loan, as construction begins on a new $50 million development there. The property will now feature 54 rental apartments above 6,600 square feet of retail space in a transit-friendly, walkable development, according to developer Jerry Karlik. The project is part of the Industrial Development Agency program and Brownfield Cleanup Program that revitalizes potentially contaminated properties. (The Island 360)
  3. A 28-year-old East Meadow man, Tejinder Singh, was arrested for smashing the windows of 27 parked cars with a brick on East Meadow Avenue after a witness alerted the police. Residents were surprised and said it was a strange occurrence for their neighborhood. Singh was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead. (abc7NY)
