Plainedge Baseball Edges Mineola 9-6
Three-run homer in sixth inning from Anthony Pensato breaks game open.

With the score knotted at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning between Mineola and Plainedge, Dan Stock roped a two-run single off Scott Berger to give Plainedge the lead for good.
“Scott (Berger) did a good job of getting ahead,” Mineola head coach Helms Bohringer said Tuesday afternoon at Plainedge High School. “But he wasn’t able to throw a breaking ball, or a changeup or a fastball in a good location.”
That lack of execution created a 30-pitch inning in which he got two strikes on seven of the nine hitters he faced.

Berger entered in the fifth inning in relief for Ryan Kelly, who tossed the first four innnings for the Mustangs while allowing three runs (one earned). He tossed a scoreless fifth inning, but got into trouble in the sixth.
He allowed a leadoff single to Hirshbaum, who was sacrificed to second base. The next batter singled one through the left side to put runners on the corners with one out. He then walked Plainedge leadoff hitter James Mendyck to load the bases for Dan Stock who promptly singled to drive in two runs to propel Plainedge to a 6-4 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Mineola scraped across two runs thanks to a two RBI single from Vinny Bienieck who drove in Nick Iadevio and Kenny Faath.
John Danielo notched the win for Plainedge, with Berger suffering the loss.
Mineola temporarily had control of the game in the second inning when they scored three runs. The first came on an RBI by Matt Demelas and Ryan Kelly had one of his own for the third run. Sandwhiched between those was an unearned run on an error by the pitcher.
In the top of the sixth with Mineola trailing 4-3, Chris Destefano delivered an opposite field home run over the right field fence to tie up the game.
“It was a 3-1 count, I was just looking something in my zone and I saw a fastball on the outer half which I took the other way,” said Destefano, which was his first of the year.
Next up will be Roslyn for Mineola in a Thursday afternoon home game at 4:30 p.m.
