Here are the top stories in Mineola today:
- Charles Polevich, the Mineola man accused of a hit-and-run crash that killed rapper Nicki Minaj's father, Robert Maraj, will receive a sentence of up to one year in jail according to officials. A spokesperson for the Nassau County District Attorney's office said that the 71-year-old Polevich pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an auto accident with a fatality and tampering with evidence for the incident in February 2021 in which he struck 64-year-old Maraj in his car as he walked down Roslyn Road, then left and attempted to hide his car at his home. Polevich will also reportedly have his driver's license suspended and complete community service. (Mineola Patch)
- Dozens of protesters stood out in the rain on Saturday for the "We're Not Going Back" abortion-rights protest organized by state senator Anna Kaplan (D-Carle Place) at the Nassau County Courthouse on Old Country Road in Mineola. New York Attorney General Letitia James, who was in attendance, called for an amendment to the state constitution so that women's reproductive rights would be protected by law and not threatened by the potential overturning of Roe v. - Farmingdale State College Rams pitcher Stephen Clancy of Mineola has been named Pitcher of the Year at the 2022 Skyline Conference Baseball Awards. Clancy, a graduate of Mineola High School, is ranked in the top 25 nationally in several categories.
