Here are the top five stories today in Mineola:

  1. Long Island police officers planned to boycott watching the Super Bowl on Sunday due to the NFL's choice of Snoop Dogg as one of the performers in the halftime show. Williston Park lawyer Anthony Capetola called on the NFL to drop the rapper from the show in a Feb. 3 letter because of his songs that have been labeled anti-police. The letter was part of a post by the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association that said, "If you choose to watch the game at all, (we won't be) halftime is a great moment to shut your TV off in honor of those men and women in blue who gave their lives for us." (Glen Cove Patch)
  2. A Hempstead man tried to rob Macy's in the Roosevelt Field Mall in East Garden City on Saturday and was arrested, according to Nassau County police. Antwain Key, 32, reportedly stuffed multiple sweaters and jackets into a bag at Macy's and then left without paying for them. Two Macy's employees tried to apprehend Key in the parking lot, but he pulled out a knife and ran to the upper level parking lot. Police officers arrived and arrested Key, who they say had previously been arrested on Jan. 25 for burglary and released without bail on Jan. 26. (Mineola Patch)
  3. Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) President Phillip Eng, who has been at the helm since 2018, is resigning. Under Eng's direction, the LIRR had the best on-time performance in its history last year. Effective Feb. 28, current Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi will serve double duty as interim LIRR president. (Mineola Patch)
