Police: New Hyde Park Man Attempts to Grab Boy, Injures Police Officer

The man struggled with police after he resisted arrest on Friday, authorities say.

A New Hyde Park man was arrested Friday after Nassau Police said he tried to grab a 5-year-old boy and then injured a police officer when he resisted arrest in Westbury.

According to authorities, Prateek Pokhrel, 35, attempted to grab the young boy who was holding hands with his mother at a bus stop on Post Avenue at 5:43 p.m.

The man fled the bus stop and boarded a NICE bus across the street that was heading eastbound on Maple Avenue, police said.

Officers say they stopped the bus near Union Avenue and ordered Pokhrel to exit the bus and he refused.

Pokhrel was placed under arrest after a struggle that caused an officer to be taken to a local hospital for a fracture in his right hand, police said.

Authorities say they also determined that Pokhrel damaged the side view mirror of a car on Westbury Avenue.

The man was charged with second degree assault, second degree custodial interference, fourth degree criminal mischief, endangering the welfare of a child, obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest.

He was arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.
